I have a non mongering (yet) friend asking me about Open Water Diving.

He was asking about the caribbean side which i know nothing about. Even my favorite from Limon has never mentioned Limon being a nice place to visit...

can anyone who has expertise help point me in the right direction?

Ron

Suggest he go to the DR as I know that some of the All Inclusives in Puerto Plata have dive packages they offer as I was just looking at getting my Dive Master certification there. The prices are very reasonable and you would be able to get it done in a week. I think the basic Open water certification was just over $400.00 Depending on where he goes you can get great deals on Orbitz for Flight and Hotel along with a Car if you feel up to driving the 20 minutes to Sosua. I have no issues driving in the CR or DR and the car gives you a lot more freedom.

Diving on the pacific side the visibility is lowered during the wet season. The runoff greatly reduces vis. I have dove with Herradera divers near Jaco. and out of Nosara on the pacific. Good dives lots of color and life. The diving is better on the carribean side with more stable vis, and more coral vs rock reef.

Best place to dive in CR is Isla Cano (Conyo pronunciation ). I have dove everywhere in CR. Caribbean vis, pelagics, huge schools, really nice. It's 20 some miles off the Pacific coast. You can get there from Uvita, Dominical or Drake Bay.
