I'm a 56 yo danish man considering to move to CR.
I have limited savings, and will have to start some kind of business to survive.
So I would like to find an experienced partner who can show me the ropes and help me start up.
Its my plan to start a simple operation on a small scale, but I'm willing to listen to your suggestions. I see you as a co-worker/investor. I speak fluently Castellano.

Good luck. I would be extremely careful about who you get involved with. The national pastime in Costa Rica is how to extract money from foreigners. I do not have any suggestions on what type of business you should look into, but the laws on working in Costa Rica if you are not a Permanent Resident are not in your favor.

as stated above be careful
lots of snake motherfuckers for every good guy down there
and that doesn't even begin to sort out compliance w the laws of the country

Both you and the above, indicates that CR legislation dos'nt favor the entrepeneur. I guess you compare to US. Coming from Denmark I'm used to comply a lot with government demands.

perhaps i was a bit strident
i actually was very fortunate to work w a great guy in developing something very small
certainly nothing that would provide for a living income but it was fun for a number of reasons and something i'll never forget in this lifetime
i have no reason to be sour about anything and yet it could have gone a LOT of different directions
if you are savvy and want to do a LOT more than just invest in others there are success stories
one of the greatest hurdles is without question finding competent, caring, hardworking individuals
i heard it echoed and watched it in action over and over in my forays throughout the country
you are limited to the local folks for employment and thats just the beginning of it
if you are going to be going to CR for some fun and adventure anyway i recommend seeking out business owners and talking to them about their experiences
if you are staying at SL or LA the chances are you will run into Bill or Matt
buy one of those guys a beer and sit back lol

@gmail.com you might want to consider changing your screen name to something other than your email address. You are setting yourself up for a ton of spam email and maybe even worse if the CubaDave saga of the OIJ wanting him to give up names of members of CRT has any truth to it. Also not meaning to be a dick, but your naivety in choosing a screen name that posts your email address will certainly result in your being seen as low hanging fruit in Costa Rica and whatever money you have will be removed from your possession post-haste.

I hate to see people taken advantage of and I see it all the time in Costa Rica. People pretend to be your friend with the sole purpose of using you for money. It takes on many forms in CR and it can be as simple as getting you to go eat somewhere, use a certain tour company, use a freinds taxi...... etc. They will tell you it is the best in CR, and you will not get a better deal. In the end you are overcharged, and whatever it was, it usually ends up being mediocre at best. Counterfit goods are also sold all over town as originals, the cigars on the street, god forbid you buy viagra from those clowns, sun glasses, etc ..., all are knock offs. Someone you have never previously met, all of a sudden has your best interests in mind is going to end up making money off you somehow......... Have a great time in CR but keep your eyes open and your guard up all the time. If there is money involved I can assure you the other party it trying to figure out how to get their share.

Alot of old pessimistic men here lababath. CR has changed but just like any place you have to be careful with dealing with anyone less fortunate as you. My advice would be is don’t get in any rush to purchase anything. Do research on your own and ask questions from as many locals as possible to form your own opinion. Hire a great lawyer and book person and do alot of research before even choosing either. Hope this helps. Remember most that give advice on certain subjects never done it their selves and without noticing it become naysayers.
And use technology to your advantage embrace it i.e. social media, hot security gadgets, camaras via smart phones, anything you could use tech savvy to make your business prosper. Remember if anyone wants anything you have if they work long and hard enough they’ll eventually get it so don’t let this fear hinder any of your decision making process. Stay vigilant my friend and you’ll be fine.

I am neither Old or Pessimistic, and have been self employed since I was a K*D doing lawn work for neighbors. I have made a good life for myself and have done it with a lot of hard work. I have made lots of decisions that have gone very well, and some that have turned out extremely bad, but I have learned alot during the journey. If the op was looking to do some sort of venture in the USA I would be much more encouraging and give him much differernt advice. I have looked at what it takes to run a business in CR and talked with many people about how their experience has been. CR is not like anything you will encounter in the US. You have no protections, the courts are a joke, the bribery and payoffs that are prevelent in government is incredeble. The person with the most money is going to win any sort of dissagreement if it goes to court. As a foreigner if you end up in any sort of court appearence you are immediately behind the 8 ball because you are not a Costa Rican national.

Your advice about doing your own research and talking to locals is excellent. Finding a great lawyer is also sound but that in Costa Rica is very difficult. There is no real Bar Association like the US where you can get information about the person you are going to hire as your attorney. If you are not living there full time your lawyer just might be the one that takes you to the cleaners, and there will be very little you can do about it. I embrace technology but cameras in CR are only going to give you a visual reminder of what happened. I was recently robbed a gunpoint and have it on video, 4 different views, very good clarity on the video and you can see the faces just fine. I turned over along the video, the license plate number of the car, along with the names of 2 of the 3 people who were involved to OIJ. It has now been 4 months since it happened and no arrests. Thankfully my insurance covered the loss but it could have been much worse. COSTA RICA is not the USA, you have to think much differently down there, and you certainly need to take your time and do your homework.

Clearly llv4play what ever traumatic experiences you have encountered wasn’t enough to keep you from continuing to reside there.
