Eurocafé - More than a Café - 300 metros al este del cruce de Santa Ana, San Rafael de Escazú - Phone: 506 289 5206
Amid the blue and the yellow tones of the walls that create a balanced and warm atmosphere, Eurocafé awaits its patrons. The menu goes far beyond croissants and pies.

Here, jumbo shrimps in an almond sauce dance a waltz with sirloin medallions, while a peach strudel waits in line. No doubt, this is a different place that well deserves a visit.

Exótico Oriente - From a Faraway Land - 100 metros al oeste del cruce, San Rafael -
Escazú - Phone: 506 228 5980

In this exotic restaurant, the smells of curry, ginger and herbs will seduce your taste buds and entice your appetite with the promise of a delicious Thai or Indonesian specialty.

The restaurant itself is small and unpretentious, and so are the prices, so this is a great place to experience this particular cuisine in the tranquility of an informal atmosphere.

Ícarus - Cozy Haute Cuisine Restaurant - 2 kilómetros al norte del puente de Guachipelín - Escazú - Phone: 506 289 5330
This restaurant very well deserves such a mythological name, since the food is absolutely "out of this world" and close to "Ambrosia" (food for the gods).
The place is small and candlelit, and the china, glassware and silverware are exquisite. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate and offers a wide variety of imported wines. The menu favors international Haute Cuisine with a strong European influx. Additionally, chamber music is performed live on Friday and Saturday nights.

Le Monastere - Elegant French Restaurant - San Rafael de Escazú

Located on the Escazú hills, a few kilometers west of San José, Le Monastere offers a magnificent 280° view of the Central Valley. The restaurant is completely decorated with the style of a medieval abbey, and tries to preserve a mystic and elegant atmosphere.

Phone: 506 289 7000
So you want to go in style? No problem! Rent a limo, buy yourself a new suit (and the like for your companion) and make it over to Mirage.
Aside from these small extras, merely visiting Mirage may cost a small fortune if you add some drinks to your dinner. The décor, silverware and china are absolutely elegant and exquisite, as is the attention to detail and service. And of course, the food is superb and worthy of a Cordon Bleu distinction.

Sabor a leña - Pizza with a Special Taste - 500 metros al sur del cruce de San Rafael
Escazú Phone: 506 228 1491
What makes the difference of one pizza, from one parlor to another? Well, aside from the quality and quantity of the ingredients and the dough, pizzas cooked on a wood oven really give them a special flavor! This place has two levels, with a bar on the first floor and a terrace on the second.
The menu is very large with well over 40 different pizza combinations, and many pasta dishes. You will find salads and deserts as well. There is also another location in San Francisco de Dos Ríos.

Barbecue Los Anonos Famous San Jose Steakhouse - San Rafael de Escazú,
600 mts oeste del puente de Los Anonos, San José - Phone: 506 228 0180
Probably one of the oldest Steak Houses in San Jose, Los Anonos Restaurant has a high clientele. A simple and nice décor, with long tables and benches and baked clay tiles, gives this place a warm and cozy ambiance. Grilled and barbecued meats are the specialty, and the cuts are generous.

Dishes include refried black beans, salad and ripe grilled plantains on the side. Seafood selections are also very good and you can try the typical delicious dessert at the end of your meal.

"Pavas" and “Escazu” Restaurant Reviews

Bar Zulu - 250 metros al oeste de la estación de bomberos - Pavas (Near Escazu)
Phone: 506 296 3885
This is no ordinary flight into the night. At Zulu, you can enjoy a quiet dinner in the restaurant area, or cocktails, drinks and "bocas’ in the bar - where airplane and chopper models hang…… You can even dance to the latest hits, and the rhythm of the lasers and the spinning of the lights. No jet lag guaranteed! Atmosphere & Fun!

La Granja - Good Typical Food - Diagonal a la clíinica Virgen del Loretto
Pavas, (Near Escazu) - Phone: 506 290 5858
This establishment is roomy and well ventilated, with long wooden tables and benches like those in a picnic park. The kitchen is open to the customers, so you can appreciate the preparation and cooking process.
Ladies dressed in "campesino" outfits grind the corn for the delicious chorreadas that are served with sour cream, or cut the vegetables and meats for a traditional meat pot. This restaurant is very typical, clean and affordable.

Le Café - Great Café and Restaurant - 200 metros oeste de Plaza Mayor
Pavas (Near Escazu) - Phone: 506 290 1453
In the warmth of earth colors combined with antique pieces of glazed earthenware hanging here and there, this place is ideal to gather with a friend and to share the intimacy of a good conversation.
While you might think this is just a café for desserts and pastries, the menu proves you wrong, as it offers a variety of full meal dishes including meats, chicken and fish with a tendency towards French Haute Cuisine. Great food and cozy ambiance are combined here for a wonderful gastronomic experience.

Restaurante Isla Verde - Spicy Chinese Specialties - 300 metros al oeste de la Embajada de Estados Unidos - Pavas (Near Escazu) - Phone: 506 296 5068
Slipping away from the traditional Chinese décor, where the red, green and gold colors, porcelain Budas and paper-folding lamps fill the space, this restaurant has a more neutral atmosphere. Regarding the menu, no little cardboard "to go" boxes with fast-food versions of the real thing either. This place is wonderful to indulge in traditional Chinese cuisine at its finest, including some delicious spicy dishes.

Owned by two members of the traditional and very well-known cultural music group Cantares, it has a unique Costa Rican décor and atmosphere, including coffee sacks and oxcarts. The menu is typical Costa Rican. Friday nights, Cantares performs, and on Sundays, at lunchtime, there are special activities for Ch*ldren.

Although here you will not find "gauchos" riding horses, drinking "mate," or cooking huge steaks over open charcoal pits, this place offers a variety of activities all in one place.

The restaurant features a menu that ranges from light entrées and burgers to steak Argentinean style.
There is also an open patio that presents live concerts of local rock groups, and a disco with the latest musical hits. On this Patagonia you do not need to ride for endless hours to enjoy a bit of everything!

Restaurante La Luz - Every Dish a Work of Art - Hotel Alta Alto de las Palomas Alto de las Palomas, Santa Ana - Phone: 506 282 4162
Within the exquisite Mediterranean architecture of the small Hotel Alta, where the warm terracotta thick walls and forged iron conspire in a tower-like structure that overlooks the splendid and fertile Santa Ana Valley, this restaurant breathes sober elegance and savoir-faire. The menu is different for lunch and dinner; lunch is mainly focused on light meals including sandwiches and hamburgers. For that special treat you deserve from time to time, La Luz shines on top of the Doves Hill.

Bar Restaurante La Jarra - Traditional Food in Alajuela - Calle 2, Avenida 2, Alajuela
This is a bar and restaurant that offers traditional food for very reasonable prices. Dishes include fried plantains, beans, chicken, beef and various rice- based recipes. From the windows of the restaurant, you can enjoy a pleasant view of the Parque Juan Santamaría. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it is easy to spend a few hours over a coffee here. There are also a number of vegetarian options, mostly involving eggs. Here, you can also enjoy a well-chilled beer with a little lime.

Chubascos - Costa Rican Temptations - Un kilómetro al norte de la laguna de Fraijanes
Carretera al volcán Poas, Alajuela - Phone: 506 482 2069
Although Costa Rica does not have a "wine culture," much of the typical foods include barbecued meat cuts, chicken and pork. Additionally, these foods, including good, tender, juicy steak, deserve a great wine to go along with it!
This restaurant offers a good selection of imported wines. It is a great place to go when visiting the Poas volcano. Additionally, they claim that all their food is organic. Steak & Barbecue, organic foods.

Far away from the noise and congestion of the city, in the Hotel Martino Spa, this restaurant waits for its guests, with tables dressed in white and surrounded by the warmth of dark wood. A large terrace with iron and glass furniture overlooks a beautiful and exotic garden, and the pool provides an option to those who prefer eating al fresco. The menu is a combination of international cuisine focused on Italian specialties. For gourmet dining in a tranquil and warm atmosphere, Le Gourmet is a good option.

Restaurante La Casa - From the Heart of the Argentinean Pampa - 800 m al oeste de la Plaza, La Garita, Alajuela - Phone: 506 487 5587
Evoking the passion and tradition of the Argentinean Pampas cuddled in the woods of an old house with a scent of age, coal and roast, La Casa Restaurant invites you to gather with old friends or new dates. A melancholic and nostalgic tango, or Piazzolla's accordion in the background carries the soul of the audience to remote places that taste like wine and "mate." The Churrasco, the Bife de Chorizo and the Parrillada all seem to join on your behalf while they roast to a perfect medium rare, just waiting to satiate the appetite of the crowd.

Heredia, Curridibat, Tacares Restaurant Reviews

Antonio´s Italian Restaurant & Cigar Room - Entre Hotel Herradura y Hotel Meliá Cariari
Cariari, Heredia - Phone: 506 293 0622 - E-Mail: mailto:Palermo@sol.racsa.co.cr
Antonio, the owner, directed a couple of famous Italian restaurants back in New York. He has now established himself in Costa Rica and placed his Ristorante at Cariari. He specializes in grill and seafood. His famous Calamari in Casserole and his Cotoletta di Vitello Ripiena are very wise choices. They have romantic live piano music and happy-hour every afternoon. They also have a cigar room offering the best cigar brands, cognac and fine liquors.

Casa Dubon Music and Poetry - 6 kilómetros del puente del Estadio Saprissa, Sobre carretera a Guápiles, Heredia - Phone: 506 240 2753
The temperature outside is chilly, and a thin fog floats over the highway creating a melancholic and nostalgic ambiance. Once inside, a small crowd of people gather at tables around a stage or at the bar, chatting softly. Suddenly, someone with a guitar on his hands, and panic in his ear, begins to present his poems, for a long time kept secretly to himself.
This is a peña, or friends' meeting place, for art lovers and aficionados. Good food and liquors are also available here to spice up the night.

El Banco de los Mariscos - Fruits From the Sea - Del parque, 500 metros oeste
Santa Bárbara de Heredia - Heredia - Phone: 506 269 9090

This place is so large that if the tables were moved away, you could easily play a game of "papi-football" with your friends. But there is a reason for its size: this is one of the best-known marisquerías, or seafood places in this country, and every weekend it gets packed to the top.

Decoration is simple, with small, plastic terrace and a family-like atmosphere. You will find every kind of seafood and fish in very different preparations, in good portions and at a reasonable price. Our favorite is the Rio Lobsters in Garlic Butter! Yummy!

El Ceviche del Rey - With a Little Chili - Centro Comercial Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo de Heredia - Phone: 506 244 2985
Ceviche or Cebiche? It looks like it really does not matter but one thing is for sure, it is just delicious! Probably, the confusion starts with the story of this dish. Mexicans say it is Mexican, and Peruvians claim it as their own, but what is it anyway? Small chunks of fresh fish cooked in a marinade of lemon juice and some other secret ingredients. In this Peruvian restaurant, they serve it their way, with raw red-onion rings, corncobs and yam with a hint of hot chili.
Here, you can try a wide array of Peruvian specialties as well.

El Rancho de Fofo - Three in One - 100 metros al oeste de la Universidad Nacional - Heredia - Phone: 506 261 2200
Seen from the outside, El Rancho de Fofo looks like a simple bar with two twins next to it, Caramba, similar to a small tavern, and Mariscos y Más, more like a restaurant.
They all connect internally trough a "secret" hallway, so if you get tired of the music and atmosphere of one place, just move to the other without even going through the main door. An extensive menu of international food, snacks and cocktails are served in all three places.

El Refugio del Chef Jacques - French Cuisine on the Mountains - 3.5 kilómetros al norte de la plaza de Barva de Heredia - San José de la Montaña - Heredia -
Phone: 506 261 5319
Reminiscent of a fairy tale, the wooden cottage that houses this cozy and romantic restaurant is embedded on the most beautiful mountains in Costa Rica. With a magnificent view, and a climate cool and mystic, this place is ideal to taste the exclusive dishes of Chef Jacques from Belgium, along with a wonderful bottle of wine.
In the tradition of the best French Haute Cuisine, a romantic and warm atmosphere provides a fabulous experience.......with romance!

El Restaurante Campeón - Chinese Food Specialists - Avenidas 2/4, Calle Central
Heredia - Phone: 506 237 4631
This is a Chinese restaurant that is located 60 meters south of the southeast corner of the Parque Central. A favorite with locals, you can dine here on a variety of Chinese specialties including dishes made with chicken, meat and fish. For vegetarians, meatless selections are also available. This restaurant is open on Sunday and has late-night hours daily. While in the area, this is a good restaurant to visit for quality Chinese food at affordable rates.

La Casa del Café - Gourmet Café - Marriott Hotel - San Antonio de Belén - Heredia
Phone: 506 298 0000
Within the beautiful colonial architecture of the Marriott Hotel where the wood, forged metal work, stone and clay blends in perfect harmony to produce an atmosphere of peace, this café gives you the chance to taste some of the best gourmet coffees available.
Add a succulent pastry, a piece of pie, or perhaps a croissant, and you are on the verge of committing a sin of lust! Surrounded by a garden of coffee plants, this is the right place to discover the magical world of Costa Rican coffee with European heritage.

Palenque de Ojo de Agua - Dancing and Orchestra - Frente al Balneario Ojo de Agua
La Rivera de Belén - Heredia - Phone: 506 441 1309
If you feel like "shaking your body" (or at least looking and learning) to the rhythm of a Latin dance orchestra, then this is the right spot, with a capacity of as many as 700 people, each drinking, dancing, eating and chatting.
These kinds of places are very popular among the "ticos" of blood and soul, so stopping by is more like a cultural experience. The live orchestras perform weekends only, including Sundays.

Sakura - Japanese Cuisine Legend - Hotel Herradura - Intersección a San Antonio de Belén - Heredia - Phone: 506 239 0033
Sakura, in few words, is the traditional expression of the best of the best in Japanese cuisine. Everything here has the unique stamp of a first-class restaurant in Japan, from the décor to the tatami and the teppan yaki, where a skilled chef cuts, slices and prepares the most delicious specialties, with the artistry of a swordsman.
No doubt that the spirit and the ritual of this fascinating country lives in this restaurant.

Vishnu - Vegetarian's Delight - Avenidas Central/1, Calle 7 - Heredia
Phone: 506 237 2526
At this vegetarian restaurant,, located four blocks east of the Parque Central, fans of meatless dishes will find a number of tasty salads and sandwiches to try including sandwiches made on pita bread. The restaurant is separated into small rooms and the environment is open and airy. The restaurant's staff is also friendly and helpful. If you are in the area and are looking to eat vegetarian cuisine, this restaurant is worth a visit.

Curridibat, & Tacares Restaurant Reviews

K&S - Brewery and Restaurant - Centro Comercial Plaza Cristal - 600 metros al sur de la Pops - Curridabat - Phone: 506 283 7583

New K&S - Brewery and Restaurant Location:
Proprietor: Jason Cespedes - Phone: 506 494 - 2573 - Grecia - Costa Rica
Known lovingly as the "Casa de Phantasmos" ( a haunted mansion) overlooking the green valley..........In "Tacares", on your way to Grecia…..
Beautiful View of the surrounding valley, in this "haunted" ancient two-story mansion! Featuring: Great German Beers and Wines! Really excellent German Food and Seafood Specials. Music, Dancing, and Romance & Fun in the Night time!
And they also sell the "World Class" Cigars from Vegas de Santiago – Manufacturer of Fine Cigars from Costa Rica!
What comes in a tall glass or a chubby jar, has a light body sometimes, or sometimes is strong and smelly, and always, always, sports bubbling thick foam as a hairdo? Beer! At K&S you can refresh your heart and soul with these wonderful German-style beers, made on the premises in huge bronze tanks that sit off to one side. The taste and smell is different than the bottled beers on the market, so if you love this drink, you will love K&S. Excellent German Food and Seafood Specialties!"

We truly are appreciative all of of your hard work and efforts towards that detailed compilation of reviews from all over San Jose and the surrounding areas. I know and the other admins know how much hard work and effort went into it....

On the flip side the idea of the restaurant review section and our CRT Gourmets reviews were that they were unique to our site as they were done, by personal visits by our reviewer in San Jose. We also do not want to be accused of stealing information from other websites, so if using quotes, would prevent that if that is the situation.

Not to take anything away from your hard work, but we have no idea who reviewed those retaurants, what sight they came from, whether they were paid advertisements or ads and how accurate they are.

Our site is for sharing of information and that is a ton. We appreciate your efforts, just that our members, and readers understand those places were not reviewed by us so we cannot in good conscience guarantee the veracity of those reviews and conclusions.
