Have read many posts on places to eat, but was just wanting a bottom line answer........the best steak for the bucks. I will not go to CR and pay American prices for a steak. If so, then I will continue eating rib-eyes at the News Cafe.

Thanks.

I am by no means a steak aficionado, but I do like "Barbecue Los Anonos" in Escazú. Pretty good steak and reasonable. Can't remember the exact prices but I do remember being surprised at how small the bill was after taking a date there; by N.American standards of course. They serve black angus beef there.

In partial answer to your other post, I remember seeing steaks on the menu with interesting sauces/marinades but I always stick to my favorite--plain ol' T-bone.

If you go, a little advice: The cab driver might not know where it is so just tell him it's in Escazú past the Los Anonos Bridge ("puente de los anonos"). After learning my lesson the first time, I tipped the taxi c1000 to come back in 1.5 hours to come get me again. Hailing a cab on the highway in front of the Restaurant is EXTREMELY difficult and dangerous because people come hauling ass down the hill around a curve, and there are no street lights over there.

Dear John:
Bottom Line Here, I have eaten at many of the restaurants the distingushed CRT Gourmet has reviewed and all kidding aside. I have yet to nor do I ever expect to find US Quality steaks in CR at any price!!!!!!!!!

I have changed my mentality when going out for steak down there and gone on the premise of finding a good quality Costa Rican style steak at a reasonable price.

YO Gourmet Amigos:
Actually, the best steak in CR is one you grill yourself. As for food quality and prices as a whole, I much prefer the abundant availability of restaurants in the US. I know a number of the well traveled gents on this site sometimes rave about the cuisine in CR but I for one do not. I can only do so much fish, beans & rice and potatos. When one has a "CR standard " quality evening meal it is overpriced. I love a wide assortment of veggies.....cooked, not steamed......Hola buffet in US.

The truth is.........I really miss my grits, ham with red eyed gravy with crispy bacon, eggs and drop biscuits. Damn, getting hungry again.

For you guys living down there and who want to buy your own steaks and cook them, I forget the name of the place but it is in Heredia and is a humongous discount club for members (i.e. Sams, BJ's, Priceclub) but I just forget the name. We would buy steaks from there when I lived in Heredia and grill them and they were pretty damn good. Sorry I forgot the name but you can not miss the place as it is on the right hand side when you are coming to Heredia from San Jose. Definitely worth joining.

They had a place in Houston that operated on that 'cook your steak' principle called U R Cooks.

I was under the impression that much of the beef in CR came from Argentina. I know the Cafe Del Rey explicitly states on the menu that
their beef comes from Argentina.

I thought the cafe delRey states that they have US beef now.

The bottom line is if you are a beef lover,Costa Rica is not the place to go.

I know the beef at leMonastere is pretty good, but I avoid beef anywhere except the famous delRey cheesburger to help with the hangover.

Admin3, Gringotim, Circus, et al;

Many of you might be suprised to learn that the horseshoe gets it meat from the same supplier as the Outback in Escazu does.

this past week, I tried the NY and the Ribeye and was quite impressed.

the resturant part is upstairs. Ask for Terry Boone, the manager. I think you'll be impressed.

My take on fav steaks in CR...(and I'm a steak affectionado)

Best meat at Tico prices..."Churrascos" in Barrio Escalante

Best meat at US pricetags... "Invernadero" in Escazu
