In many, many instances ANY dental work in CR just doesn't add up as cheap money wise....perhaps cheap work wise....but not money.

Any of us who are over the age of 50 can purchase the AARP Dental Plan. This plan, when MANIPULATED (that's your job....to figure out how to best use it) is most cost effective and includes dental implants. Yes, there is a two year waiting period for work like crowns and implants....and there is also an annual maximum.....but if you work with your dentist and the implant specialist, they'll be more than happy to assist you in manipulating how to best get the work done at the least costly rate.

Now, I AM referring to one or two implants....if you neglected your mouth and your teeth during the course of your adult lifetime, you're gonna pay, pay, pay, pay; whether it's in CR or in the US of A. Why did you neglect your teeth all that time? Moronic thinking and you'll just have to resign yourself to paying out the ass.

Major disadvantage to having dental work in CR: Who backs up the "warranty" when some of the work fails....and fail it shall? You'll have an excuse to fly down to CR but big deal....when you add up just how much you're spending, you're better off sticking with your USA based dental "team". One stop shopping in the dental business is for idiots. And, we're finding more and more of these "one stop" joints in the USA. I have no "advice" for that kind of work.....you must have REALLY neglected simple and basic oral hygiene.

However, if we're talking about one or two crowns and one or two implants, this AARP insurance plan really is cost effective. The premium is about $60 per month and that covers three cleanings and exams per year and basic dental services....but for root canals, crowns, and implants, there IS a two year waiting period which, at the time, seemed to me like it sucked. However, after the fact, I saved so much money compared to flights back and forth to SJO and by USA Board Certified professionals who were there to back up their work should something go astray, it was a no brainer.

It may be YOUR ticket if you've just a couple of issues. However, if you've wholly neglected your teeth (a LIVING organism) you're fuccked money wise. Period. Still makes more sense to have it done locally in your area of the USA so that you don't run into "problems" due to "cost cutting" going on in CR.

Still, it's your life and your mouth......do want you want. I know what worked for me....both financially and mentally. I HAD been a proponent of using CR dental "professionals". I'm very glad I elected to stick with the good ole' USA and this AARP insurance....MANIPULATING it so that I maximized my benefits with the assistance of the bean counter in the local dentist's office.....and that was via the Mayo Clinic dental pro's in Rochester. Mayo ain't on the map for dental work......but that's coming.....

From my own experience, dental work in costa rica is very good. Instead of the dentists that cater to americans and set their prices at 50% of the going rate in the US, I use a local dentist (pm me for the reference) . the dentist just appreciates the extra $$ from a few nice americans.

I have had a lot of work done for less than $3,000 over a period of several years, that would have cost $20,000 in the states. Crowns, root canals, etc. Very good work. Then she refered me to a wonderful oral surgeon that did two implants for a reasonable price.

I was warned by the dentist that one tooth may not last, and sure enough it crapped out here in the states. I cost over $2,000 to rectify the situation. It would have been $200 in CR. That is truly a drawback. But here in the states; make an appointment, wait to be seen, then they tell you what you need, then you make a follow up, then you get some of the work done, then make another appointment to follow up, then another appointment, etc, etc, etc.

I had stuff done in 8 days in CR. that would have taken 6 months in the states.
As the economy has changed in CR prices have gone up everywhere, tourist areas expecially, but many of the locals are still holding there own.

People have teeth all over the world, the US doesnt have a monopoly on dental work.

Dental work and the chicas dont mix well
One trip, when I just finished some dental work and was chilling at the HDR, one of the regular ladies was trying to convince me to go with her.

My reply was , i just came from the dentist and he numbed me up pretty good. So, if you want to go it may take me hours to feel anything and finish up. Later that night I felt better and went to SL where I took a nice Nica back to the room for an agreed upon two pops and massage. after the first pop I violently threw up, and she was concerned. so I couldnt finish but she was sweet and very mothering. That is one lady that deserved a great propina.

Last week I went to the dentist here. I showed him the printed out quote I got from my dentist from home for $1,250.00. He did the EXACT same work for $210.00. The topping on the cake was that he told me that if I paid cash it would be $180.00!!
