You guys did a great job in a thread that was tailor made for me - seriously, very good :) :) :)

Don't misuse the term "tica" - it simply means Costa Rican female - its an easy way we can avoid giving offense and is a great example of preventable stupidity. As I've stated before, this site probably adds to the confusion over the term

I realize preventable stupidity probably bothers me - and it appears like it does others - more than some - but why look dumb if you don't have to and why risk offending folks in CR if you don't have to?

I thought everyone except Rocky was very professional and polite with their responses. I actually learned quite a bit about the proper usage of many terms. Thanks.

for what it's worth, ''puta" is simply slang for "prostituta"...

I knew a girl in the US who worked as a ho for an escort agency. when she was challenged/confronted and called a "prostitute", she calmly explained that "prostitutes" walked the streets, '*******' worked for agencies, she was convinced in her own mind she was not a prostitute but an "escort'', it sounded nicer to her...

So if you want to be nice....call them "escortas" (factitious humor, sorry....)

Actually "puta" isn't slang per se... it does means prostitute and it is in the Spanish dictionary as such.

You've hit on an interesting point.

If you visit Medellin and you talk to working girls, they also make a distinction between "puta" and "prepago" o "dama de compañía" (whore versus escort), the same way your US friend does.

Most gringos simply don't get the distinction - to us a whore is a prostitute is a puta is a prepago is an escort. But to women in the profession, it makes all the difference in the world.
