We all know about SL, LA etc. but I wanted to create a list of inexpensive hotels or Apt near the Gulch under $30 a night irregardless of chica fees. Maybe for a retired fellow on a very tight budget, he is satisfied with massage parlor action and doesn’t need to bring chicas back to room.

Here are a few I found, but we “boots on the ground” intel. Anybody have experience with any hitels under $30?

I found these:
8+ rated, Double bed and AC and 2 kilometers from Gulch
Hotel San Jose $20
Hotel Cultural Plaza $30 (pictures looked nice)
Hotel Colombus
Hotel Escondite Calle 54 $23
Hotel Casanova $28
(Possible below No AC)
Hotel El Descanso $20
Hotel Quinta Avenida $23
Hotel Arrecifes $30
Boutique Hotel Calle 20 $33

I was actually thinking of trying a basic room next time I visit!
Thanks gentlemen!

First of all you don't need AC in San Jose. But the list is a great notion.

You can do a search on any hotel web site like hotels.com and find a hotel, what we need is someone who has stayed in one and found it good value for the money. Clean, comfortable and within easy reach of our favorite MPs.
Good idea though, just needs some boots on the ground recommendations.

Couple years ago I stayed at the Hemingway which was closer to $60 or so. The rooms were amongst the worst I’ve ever seen. If you paid me $$ I would not stay there again. I cannot imagine what rooms under $30 would be like. Does the price include the bedbugs?

when the old mp tour was a Chepe staple it wound its way around some of the lower end accommodations
no way the average traveler would even consider these places
old twin w a dresser and a bathroom down the hall kind of stuff
sure it can be done but why?

I found this apt and booked it for upcoming trip a few months out.

I think another senior member stayed here or a similar set up and gave it a thumbs up.

$25 a night for full apt with kitchen and everything you need right off central.

One of the members asked "why would you stay at a dingy hotel with bedbugs? "

That's the purpose of this thread to find a nice accommodation under $30. Not dingy and no bed bugs.

I had the opportunity to look at a room in Hemingway Inn and yes, it was bad... Didn't stay... And, I was told by member it closed down?

Feel free to share your best hotel picks under $30! Pura Vida!

Caiman,

Best wishes for a good stay. Hopefully it's as good as it Seems! If it is, I may end up returning to San Jose as well as some like minded others will certainly do. There 's a place somewhat near Clinica Biblia that has similar efficiency apartments and when I remember the name and location, I'll list it. It's in a safe but all concrete area, little plant life but a straight shot walking to gulch area. 10-15 minutes.

Good for you that you had this question and followed up on it. It will certainly be helpful for us older retirees...

Are you thinking of Sudamer Apartments? Calle 7 just south of Av 14. http://www.sudamer.net
Close to Pantera Rosa

I haven't heard anything about them in a while.

Yes Sudamer is the place. Good going! It's been a few years since I stayed there. Owner was a race car driver in his youth. Very honorable guy but he made it clear that it was up to you to make sure your guests were OK.

I stayed there back in 2016 or so. It's a converted hostel which is now 5 or 6 apartments. It was clean and quiet and relatively secure. I say relatively as there was no night watch or room safe so you're on your own for managing valuables and cedula checks. During my 3 night stay I saw not one other guest. I think they had just opened up. Hot water was iffy and I never could get the wifi to pick up. But yes clean, convenient, and priced right. I used it for a shack up with a nica :)
