I think the problem is that the service you offer in London isn't in demand in Costa Rica (massage with hand or breast relief).

In Costa Rica, "sala de masaje" is a euphemism for a casa where prostitutes work (they are also called "pensions" - which in Europe is a type of bed and breakfast). Since prostitution is legal in Costa Rica but pimping and pandering is not, the girls work as 'independents' in the casa, paying for the room separately (the casa provides the rooms and maybe a bar).

Many "salas" offer "massage service". One Backpage ad (under "Body Rubs" breaks it down as:
-Massages professional relaxing.
-Tantric massage
-Stimulations in various parts of the body.
"Our service is complete." <- this means sex
-Complete extras: variable. <- bareback blowjob, anal, etc.

So, for about $54 an hour, I can get a massage and have sex (usually I skip the massage). All the Backpage ads are about the same (except for the occasional escort that puts an ad in the Body Rubs section).

Craigslist (under "Theraputic Services") has some that appear to be genuine massage therapists (hand or breast relief not mentioned) and then some cleverly worded ads - my favorite is "Thai Massage by Busty,Curvaceous Therapist" who says she is a "Certified Attractive Thai, Holistic and Swedish Blonde Masseuse" whose massages include "Kama Sutra". And illustrates her ad with a picture of a woman in lingerie. "Certified Attractive"? And what's "Swedish Blonde" massage?

Now, could you own a massage business? Sure. Non-residents can own businesses. Legally you can run the business, but not work in it. So you can't give massages but you could train or supervise. You'd need a Costa Rican accountant.

As to the Costa Rican people they are very friendly. However, a lot of Ticos see foreigners as rich people and are not adverse to separating them from their money as fast as possible (in a friendly way) so you have to keep your eyes open.

Previous comments about reporting working foreigners I think were focused on the 'working girl' scene. For example, if a blonde European girl started looking for customers every night at the Blue Marlin Bar maybe someone would report her.

theres an old saying "if you want to make a million in CR bring two"
there is just so much red tape and if you want to present yourself as "massage" once again that means sex there
if you had say a physical therapy type place you might be in a better position
but then you run into another problem and that is training and employing ticos
i agree w the others that there is not much of a market for legit or semi legit massage business in CR
come take a look for yourself but i think you might do better in a place like LA or SD for your type of work

I wanted to add a few colones to this thread.

I live in Guanacaste in the playa coco/hermosa area.
In Coco, there is a massage place one block from the beach. I have Not personally visited but I believe it is for massage only.

There are independent massage therapists located directly on the beaches in hermosa and ocotal.
These are legitimate therapists and charge about $30 per hour massage. To my knowledge, there are no "extras".

I am unaware of other pure massage service
