Well I just want to give credit to all who responded. La Esquinita de JM is the real deal, quality food and low prices (see photos). Soda Peru as well. I will try La Croilitta(?) tomorrow. I'm at SL for the Superbowl and noticed the SL menu omelette is much smaller than last time and more expensive. Thanks all for the tips.

Did someone rent the former Soda Peru spot? Walked by there this week but no for rent sign. Shuttered up, tables and chairs still there. I hope whoever rents it will buy the former owner's recipes. They were a very hardworking family.

My first post here! I have been reading the forums since Aug 2019 and have been to CR 3 times so far. First of all, thanks everyone here for the wealth of information shared. I will try to chime in whenever I can or as long as I do the mongering (which might eventually stop for me, i don't know it yet hehe)

Anyways, I was in CR between Dec 26 and Jan 8. I ate in Soda Peru twice that trip. When I went there on Dec 31st for lunch, they were cleaning out the place and I asked the lady who works there as the waitress if they are renovating or closing temporarily. She replied that they are closing it for good. My Spanish is not good enough to ask her why they are closing, nor did I have the interest at that moment in using the translator app to ask her in Spanish as I was really hungry and went looking for a different place to eat.

So I think they are closed officially at the end of 2019. I will miss that place when I visit the next time.

Right around the corner from soda peru is a colombian place, also very good and inexpensive. If you are lucky enough to go there and you see some big square things wrapped in banana leaves make sure you order one. They are tamales that are very good 1/2 chicken 1/2 pork, not like your mexican tamales but very good and worth the price. 1 and a casado plate and you are stuffed.

I tried one of these Soda's i read so much about on this site. I headed east on Avenida Nine and found a traditional looking place on a corner next to a mural of a person with a beard. The place had no name but seemed ok. Everything was fine except that I had to share the table with a roach on the chair next to me.

Chelles was my go to spot at least two times a day. I just absolutely love their food. To my dismay, I see on Google that they are "permanently closed."

Chelles closed on Feb 8, 2020 before the COVID lockdown in March. Many attribute this to the implementation of the 13% VAT tax in July 2019. Other low margin businesses also closed such as Soda Peru. And then came along comes the COVID lockdown shuttering tens of thousands of small businesses. Next you will see the impact of the IMF "deal". If that goes through it will bring austerity cuts, increased taxes, and protests. If it fails, expect domestic bond defaults and massive colon devaluation. Either way, foreign capital will go home. The Legislature has to give the IMF proposal it's stamp of approval in the beginning of June. Predictably, the unions planned to protest at the Legislative building yesterday (Thursday). Soooo, in an amazing coincidence, the Legislature suspended operations until the first week of February, closed the building and went home (because one person tested positive for COVID).

Excuse the rambling, but yes, Chelles is no more.
