I need to meet some nonmongers at the Balmoral. How about a restaurant on the plaza near it? Tico style preferred.
Thanks

Chelles on SE corner of ave. central y calle 9, across from the Balmoral pharmacy.

One restaurant I like, not Tico, is Wok y Noodles. It's an Asian fusion restaurant on ave. central between calle 19 y 21, closer to calle 21. Here's a Foursquare link. https://foursquare.com/v/wok--noodles/4 ... 0426ab05bc

Try the El Patio next door to the Balmoral . Also Marsicar down the street and Costa del Sol for the Don Gordo special if you eat there let them use the upstairs restroom :o :o :o   :? :?

I stayed there only once some years back - if I'm in SJ, I'll often stop in and see what's up with them - its an OK place in a good location (for those who don't know, its across the street from the Presidente, down the hill and a 1/2 block from the HDR).

Their guest policy is - at least as of a few months ago - you had to pay for each guest - I honestly don't recall if it was like $12 or $24 - they do/did have some half price specials bringing the room cost to the $50 range - no clue if they still have this special - it was green season my last trip.

Bottom line:

I would stay elsewhere if I wanted company in my room - it never impressed me as a place particularly friendly to the hobby, nor did it ever impress me as a particularly well run place. It did impress me as a Tico owned place that is going to do whatever thay want with profits secondary consideration (I have no inside knowledge - just a gut feel - but they have to know what a working girl commented to me about the Presidente:

"Its a block and a half away from one of the biggest whorehouses <well, not exactly - but I got her point> in Central America - why not capitalize on it?"

It sums up my feelings about the Balmoral.

PS Anytime you are thinking about staying at a hotel you are unsure about, that is not mentioned on CRT, or part of what I like to call the "Holy Trinity" :

Call them or e mail them - and ask about their policy - you will certainly not be the first to do so, and the question will not shock them - if they say they allow guests, make sure you ask if there is a fee - while always annoying, the fee could range from a fairly modest $10 or $12 @ the HDR to a completely crazy $75 @ the Holiday Inn - all plus tax, of course     )
