This is the upscale (very expensive) steakhouse at the Intercontinental Hotel in Escazu. A friend and I had a good day at the Casino and decided that if the President of China can stay there with his whole entourage,we could have a great steak. WRONG...I hope he doesn't take back the Futbol stadium he had built to receive favors from us. We had 2 SMALL glasses of wine each...onion soup (outstanding) split a Caesar salad (pretty good) and a $50 ribeye steak that was supposed to be Angus beef of the highest quality (almost broke our teeth trying to eat it) So we wound up paying $75 each (plus whatever the dentist is going to charge me.) So I recommend that if you find yourself there and "have to" eat something, the soup and salad might be acceptable.

I have had reasonable luck with the beef loin at Esquina de Buenos Aires and at Machu Pichu. The steak Bill serves at the Sportsmans is good. Unless you are going to be in Costa Rica a long time, I'd too suggest waiting until you get home.

Hey Sailor, is the breakfast buffet for hotel guest or open to the general public. Went to their website and the buffet looks amazing.

For what it's worth I have never had a bad steak at la esquina. I've had sweetbreads, ribeye, filete (pittsburght style). All good. Pricey but good.
I also love the service and atmosphere there. Plus, close to some MPs

There is an article in today's amcostarica about the free trade agreement signed by China and Costa Rica. One of the things that we are going to ship to China is "BEEF" jajajaja Once they get a taste of this delicacy they might take back the Stadium. I agree that Esquina de Buenos Aires is a decent place for a steak. I also like Cascada and La Parrilla de Buenos Aires in Escazu.

Be careful with beef in BA. Esquina de Buenos Aires has a good front and it's a nice place but the beef is not the best. They have certain cuts marked on the menu that are imported from home and even those are not the best. I speak from having been in BA 20+ times. I don't have an answer for steak in San Jose but would like to hear one.
