Nationwide and Lloyds of London both have insurance that meets Costa Rica requirements. Pretty cheap and a lot more benefits than what are required. For someone 55 staying 8 days it was about 23.00

Hey Everyone.

I had to fucken get out, I was going crazy out here with the fires and lockdown. With that, I am CR bound next month. Have a few thoughts on my mind, hopeful some of you can chime in and let me know what you're thinking.

1. Maybe or maybe not staying at SL. I love it here, dont get me wrong. But I was thinking an Airbnb might be the way to go with cleanliness. Also not sure if SL will be open so I want to prepare just in case
2. Renting a car for the month, or not getting a car and ubering around everywhere. (Car for the month with all fees is about $700... pretty steep)
3. Going to Tamarindo via Private Shuttle (if any goes there), Rent a car, or fly via Sansa/Nature Air

With weather clearing up, I do want to spend most of my time in Tamarindo. Let me know your thoughts and give me some ideas as to what else you might add/change. Hope you guys are all safe.

Also for those of you looking to go down. I found on another forum that people are getting very cheap Travelers Insurance through Trawick Insurance, backed by Nationwide. I think my quote is around $56.

Contact Russ the viagra man. He rents cars privately, for a lot less money

I do not know where you will get a rental car for 700.00 per month with all fees. I guarantee you that you will have about another 5-700 added on for mandatory insurance for the month. The rental agencies do not care that you have personal insurance thru your credit card or even purchased a plan for international driving. If you decline the complete coverage, depending on the car, you will be hit with a 1000.00 to 2500.00 hold on a credit card in order to rent the car and have to worry about all kinds of bullshit damage they make up to take that money. I have rented plenty of cars over the last 10 years and found it better to buy all the insurance and play Days of Thunder with the car and not worry. The last few years before buying a car in Costa Rica I was going thru a private individual and a Suzuki Sidekick was 35.00 per day, that was the cheapest way I found to rent a vehicle. I have no clue what Russ charges but I would certainly get in touch with him and find out what the charges are and what would happen if you had a problem in Tamarindo and needed a repair or replacement vehicle.

True :D . I once had a friend in the states take a rental car offroading and brought it back all trashed out. At the time I thought it was car abuse, but in this case if the rental company gouges for insurance, it could be justified, and fun.

Buy a sim card on the street. Load it with 10 bucks credit, done. You will be using wifi most of the time anyway.

Exactly as whitecat stated. I have used both Moviestar and Kolbi. Kolbi gets better reception if you travel out of town and is what I currently use. I use very little data as most places I go have wifi and I use their connection. Most of the time my data gets used up using Waze while driving. Make sure your phone is not locked to US and Virgin Islands as it will not work in Costa Rica if it is, this is regardless if it is carrier unlocked or not. You will need your passport to get a Sim if you go to any of the Provider stores but there are tons of mom and pop shops you can get a sim without all the bullshit but I got mine from provider stores.

I've used GoogleFi for the last few years and live in CR now. Kept my US number and it works everywhere in the world just like at home - get off the plane, turn it on and you're good to go. I pay something like $0.20/min for international calls but use WhatsApp mostly to call friends and family here and in the US. That way I don't have to mess with two sim cards or phones when I travel. Assuming I ever get to travel again, of course.

Any good alternatives to the SL to stay at? Debating Airbnb, or another chica friendly hotel. SL may not be open when I arrive

Most Airbnb's in San Jose are not visitor friendly. I've checked out many of them. So be sure you read the rules section in the listing, and you may have to ask when you inquire about the place.

I had a friend stay at Aloft in Santa Ana and as long as the girl was not dressed like a working girl there was not a problem getting her into the room. Was a very nice place as well but a good clip from the gulch.

I used to live in that area, and I'm surprised they would allow that. They might give you the benefit of the doubt on one every once in a while, I'm not sure. But best to check with them before you book.

I have stayed at a number of AirBNB's without any problems. When I inquire I am upfront and ask if there are any restrictions on visitors. Most say no problem although a few said no parties or noise after 10 PM, in other words be cool. It was funny one time a regular met me at the airport and when we got to the condo for check in she knew the owner. I think if you are discrete about it many really don't care, they just want the cash.

BNB might be the choice. I don’t know of ANY hotels open. What “other” chica friendly hotel are you talking about? I’m counting about 6 around the SL area......all closed.

Boy, you must really need to get laid........
