Newbie here! First time heading to CR. I am 37 and have never really planned a trip like this before but have always been excited about the idea of it. So I pulled the trigger booked the hotel and flight. However, after reading a lot of the recent trip reports I am having conflicted emotions about the whole thing. Almost canceled the trip today but did not and I guess I am looking for affirmation regarding my planned debauchery. Any insight would be helpful. Also curious if anyone else will be traveling at the same time.

need to understand your apprehension before any specifc advice can flow.

If no one from the board will be there same time, dont fret, you can and will meet others at Sportsmen lodge. Relaxed place, good bar, chicas on site, plenty of guys to talk to with same plans. Would actually recommend staying there instead of HDR for first time. The HDR is the belly of the beast and can be overwhelming to be there since the hotel is 24/7 lobby action. The sharks will see you the moment you step foot in there (just a fact, staying or just visiting there).
Sportsmen has down time in its common areas, midnight to about 10 AM before chicas come in.

I think the apprehension is related to wether or not it will be a memorable experience. And maybe just some good old American guilt over going and paying for all the pu*sy I can find. I don’t know if that makes sense.

Understood. It will be memorable for sure. Be sure to plan some other activities like sight seeing etc while there. Treat it as a vacation in general in case you get there and it’s just not your scene.
There are good half day trips to get out and see the country and by night you can relax.

Of course if you have booked a solo trip then I think you know what you want to do, but until you are there you will be anxious about the whole thing.

I am traveling solo. And I secretly suspect everyone that hears I’m traveling to Costa Rica thinks I’m going for the women. I’ll get over that though lol

If you book an excursion then that’s where you will take 50 pics in various locales to show your friends etc, your vacation. There are also numerous parks and places to walk and get some pics in and around the city while walking.

Pro tip: go to the Hotel Castillo and ask to see the penthouse level rooms on the third floor. Even if they are fully booked , They have a common walkway to their front doors that is open air and faces the city and mountains. Makes for some great pics , especially at sunset.
It’s just a few min walk from HDR or SL.

Excellent advice. Thanks a lot. Any excursions you’d recommend?

This is a popular one on this board, its about 10 hours, leaving early morning, but back in time to enjoy the nightlife

Check the Non Gulch activiteis forum, lot more info to peruse with specific feedback.

Yeah, do research on that also. In short, it won’t be like the movies

Pack a second shirt and cap then swap them after lunch, wear khaki shorts or jeans. This way photos from the one trip look like two. Try not to include other people from the tour in the background if you do this, they will not have changed clothes.

Great advice. :) And if you have a girlfriend like mine in the states who I swear must have worked for the Gestapo, you can't be too careful.
Don't forget to change the prop fish in the different "fishing trip" photos.

Hey Slipped. I will be down there at the same time. I’m tied up during the week days until around 6 but will have time at night and on weekends. Hit me up. It’s my first time going down there as well so I will be in the same boat.
