What's a cheap place to stay for the night in Jaco? Coming in May and have a late flight and don't want to spend money for a day on a condo. Don't matter if it's girl friendly or not. Thanks

So my friends and I decided to stay in San Jose the first night and the rest at Jaco. What's a good place to stay in the "gultch"?

Just stay at the HDR, might as well.

New member here.

In reading the information at the beginning of this thread and several others, I felt like I was taking an online class. I wrote down many notes. I definitely appreciate all who took the time to post the very detailed information that helps us newbies.

When I travel to San Jose, CR in May (my birthday weekend - Cinco de Mayo), it will be my first time there. I am definitely no stranger to mongering internationally (Santo Domingo, DR under my belt and had some luck in Toronto, CA-nonpros).

I see that you all recommend places like the Sportsmen Lodge for lodging. I normally rent using the AirBNB platform when I travel. I tried to do a search here for AirBNB experiences in San Jose, but saw posts regarding other places like Medellin. Maybe I did not look hard enough. Anyhow, if anyone has rented an apartment/condo unit using AirBNB in San Jose, and there was no issues with bringing "company" back or security, let me know the location of the unit (preferably close to restaurants, bars, etc).

Thanks

Be very careful of airbnb. I have used several in San Jose. Always verify before that "friends" are allowed to visit each time you book regardless if you stayed before and it was allowed. A couple changed the policy in between trips. My preference for better security is having a doorman/ security. Also many do not have safes.

Thank you. Advice well taken.

For those those dates, the decent AirBNB rentals in San Jose had that "no friend" policy. Also, you made a good point regarding a doorman and the security. I just booked a room at the SL for my stay.

Thanks again!

All the normally listed hotels (La Amistad, Castillo, Taormina, ZII, HLH, Morazan, HDR) have access control (door man / reception).

I haven't heard of a single ladrone attack on a hotel (hotel invasion?) in years.

An AirBnB, because its not a hotel, is a bit different.

I asked a Tico friend about all the forted-up houses and he said "If you are the house on the block without bars and razor wire, the ladrones break in" - which makes sense.

The biggest issues (based on reading the entire board over time) seems to be (1) chicas that steal and (2) staff that steals.

(1) you can take care of my chica-proofing your room (I've never had one steal my toothbrush but mongers have had that happen). I admit I've had lapses in that regard but have never lost anything - and I trust mi novia enough to have her hold my colones* (a trust she's never betrayed).

(2) is harder. I have never had an issue at LA, Taormina or SL with stuff I have left out (I would add the Castillo but I was the only guest but I am sure Matt has hired honest staff). The hotels know theft is the kiss of death - hell people are slamming the Taormina (basically a new hotel) for theft back in the Mona Lisa days.

*Instructions to mi novia for a heart attack: "open the safe, take the money, put my wallet and passport in my hand and call 911 on the way out".

I had the same problem when I recently re-enrolled. Did you have a different password on your initial enrollment than the one you use today? I sign into the site using my current password but I need to use my old password to access the boards.

Hey, these aren't your normal tech geak admins. It's the weekend and they are probably busy banging with their duties as International Playboys.

It should just be on a rotating site banner.
