It is being reported by a couple of posters on ISG that the Del Rey has been sold and being remodeled for another purpose. I just checked their website and it is down. Does anyone have any info?

It's hard to get good and reliable intel on many things in San Jose.

A former security guard at the Rey told me that the Rey plans to re-open as an Executive style hotel, catering to business and family travelers. {Kind of like the Presidente, Dunn Inn. Apparently the Taormina is leaning that way, as well. } If so, let's see if the market demand is there.

Nothing was mentioned about the Key Largo, or the Del Mar Restaurant.

We will have to see how all this shapes up in the near future. Alot of man-tourists had already moved vacations out of San Jose in favor of Jaco.
Perhaps San Jose will be for locals and gringo residents, with a smaller man-tourist footprint.

And depending on the economy and government policies over the next couple of years, it could become less attractive to some gringo residents.

This is unfortunate. My first trip gets canceled due to a pandemic. Now the Del Rey is going to close.

While the main website is under construction, their facebook page is up with current posts and maintains a distinctly man-tourist focus.

All i know is this, been going to costa for years now, bought a house in Hermosa and travel there often. Because of this I play in Jaco and never travel to SJ. BUT, found myself on my way back to Miami and had a flight cancellation at the last minute so I decided to book a room at the Del Rey. this was superbowl weekend. Place was DEAD. Seems working girls are discouraged from going there now. A few girls told me they are not allowed to wear jeans. Seems managmentis trying to disuade the girls from even arriving. Was so bad that I won't go back. but I agree, the girls and are still there, the demand is still there, outside of the girls traveling to Jaco, there is not much else. Something else WILL pop up and the girls will flock to it.

That, at least, is encouraging. I still think that there is not an unlimited market for family travelers and eco tourists, who tend to pass though the Gulch briefly in the way to other destinations in the country. In other words, there is still money to be made from monger guests.

Even if the HDR does go away, the important things are the money and the pu*sy, not the building. Who knows, without the gulch, the San Jose action might shift toward Amon. Still close to the SL, LaA, and Castillo. Local bars and MP's ripe for a remodel, from VIPs to Latina Divas, to the old ZB. Gringo watering holes like Bar Poas and Malibu in easy stumbling distance. There is even the strip club Alcazar nearby. All less visible than one block off Av Central and therefore not as in-your-face to the tourism board. Perhaps the Taormina shifts yet again (remember, the HDR always had an elevator fee).

Change can be good. The board could become useful again as a source of information as the scene shifts. Local guides like Pops will be on the ground to observe changes as they happen. Face it, things had grown a little stale. If dollars come to San Jose there will be chicas attracted them just like pigeons to breadcrumbs.
