I have read many accounts of the great Doctors and dentists in the San Jose area over the years.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend an English speaking dentist who they have had a good experience with.

Thanks,

CRBound

I have been very happy with Dr.Josef Cordero. His wife works with him as a periodontist. They have their own clinic on the premises so having things made is done quickly. They are located on the main road in Rohrmerser number is 506-223-8890 My cosy was 25% of what it would have been in Boston. Hope that helps

I and at least ten other gringos I know have used Dr. Sergio Chen. His clinic is at Calle 6 Avenida 4 y 6 right next to La Grillion.222-0063.

He has a lab on premises so everything can be done quickly. Had a friend come down from Miami to see him, 15 caps total cost $600.00. He accepts credit cards.

The only down side is he is very busy and you might be there awhile, bring a book, sit relax and save a ton of money.

Are you sure that's correct? The average price for a cap/crown in the
US is perhaps $600 to $800. It has to be more than 1/16th of the US
cost. I know medical/dental costs in CR are cheap, relative to the US,
but I doubt they are THAT cheap.

Regarding doctors, I always thought medical care was on par with the States. But last time I met a chica with a scar across the center of her abdomin. I asked and she said she was in misery for a week before they did "exploratory." Turns out it was her appendics, so they reached in to one side. Almost ruptured.

You mean it takes a week of every conceivable test and they still didn't know?

Any doctors out there?

Gringotim,

Sorry about that need to be a better proof reader  The price was $1600.00 USD.

That price is about 1/3 the price of dentists in Escazu or Rohrmoser. I know someone else who had a full upper plate made by him for $100.00. Everyone , including myself, who has used him have been very happy with his work.

I apologize for the incorrect price in my first post. The only two negatives about this guy is,

1. He is very busy and you are going to have a lengthy wait.

2. His wife is a Gringa  (True)

I would not go so far as to say medical care here would be equal to what is available in the great teaching hospital in the US however there are some similarities in other areas.

If you can afford a hospital such as Clinica Biblica or Cima Hospital you will receive care that is on par with US medical care. They have well trained doctors, modern equipment and excellent support facilities such as labs. The cost is a fraction of what would be normal in the US. I had a colonoscopy done at CIMA Hospital. The cost for everything hospital, doctor, anesthesiologist, lab work was $425.00. The same procedure in Miami would run about $4000.00.

On the other side of the coin if you are a Tico or a gringo without money you would use the Costa Rica Social Security health care (CAJA) This can run all the way from outstanding to horrible. It is very similar to the care you would get at the clinic of a major US city public hospital.
