What is Football Handicapping?

Sports handicapping in general (and football handicapping in particular) means utilizing one or more methods of analyzing sporting events (or football games in particular) in order to determine if there is value betting on either the favorite or the underdog in individual games. If a handicapper´s analysis indicates that there isn´t a significant amount of value betting on either the favorite or the underdog in a particular game then he will deem the line or pointspread on that game to be tight and hence will opt to pass on betting on that particular game.

Virtually all of the top handicappers opt to pass on the majority of sporting events in general (and football games in particular) as there simply isn´t a significant amount of line value on the majority of games to justify placing bets on them.

If you think about it, this makes sense. If there was significant value on the majority of sporting events the oddsmakers wouldn´t be doing their jobs and consequently the long-term profitability of sportsbooks would be significantly reduced or possibly even eliminated.

But when a sports handicapper determines that the favorite in a contest is favored by too much (i.e. an overlay) to such an extent that there is value betting on the underdog then he will rationally choose to place a bet on the underdog.

Likewise, he will usually opt to place a bet on the underdog in a sporting event if he estimates that the wrong team in such a contest is favored, i.e the underdog actually has a better than 50/50 chance of winning such a match-up straight up. On the other hand if a sports handicapper thinks that a the favorite isn´t favored by enough points, i.e. will probably win the game by more than the posted pointspread a significant percentage of the time (say 56% or higher for example) then he believes that there is an underlay in the game. Concomitantly, he will make a play on the favorite in such a sporting event.
