Can someone give me an update on the poker action in San Jose? Are there still games at the Mona Lisa and the Del Rey? Can you provide me with details on limits, number of tables and when the games get started?

Thanks!

Pretty much the only game in the gulch is at the Mona Lisa. Starts daily at 2pm. $1/$2, but if there's enoug interest they get a 2/5 going too. But the 1/2 plays bigger, more like 2/5. Buy in is $100 min, no max. Crazy Ticos with money will gamble and chase to the river with gut shots or a pair. They often get lucky and actually catch. Pots are in the several hundreds. It gets a good crowd since it's the only game in town. I think Del Rey may have a game if they can get enough people but I didn't see anybody in the poker room over 3 days in March.

I always play at the ML. Good group of guys running the game. Orange's description is accurate and if they are doing the colon-based game, it's even more lively. That wasn't an every day game but you could buy in for less than $100.

Whatever happened with the Horseshoe? Still closed?

There's another poker room on the 4th (or maybe 3rd) floor. That's where they do the colones game. It was 1000/1000... WTF???????

And the buy-in was $100 min.

Fieldtech,
I think they pretty much play whatever customers want up there. There were a ton of local Asians and they wanted 1k/1k. And they play worse than the Ticos. Be patient and let one of these fisherman walk right into it and take his whole stack.

Maybe they were just waiting to get started but I played in a colones game in the first floor early in afternoon. Ticos were buying in for $40 at a time....which I never understand. Why buy in for $40 four times?

Never been up to the 4th floor....probably won't be from the sound of it either.

Thought I would report back on this topic since I just got back from my trip. I went to the Best Western, Mona Lisa and the Delrey and found the best games to be at the Delrey, while the game is fairly small they regularly had a 500 500 colones games going that starts around 1pm with one table with two tables running later in the afternoon. There is a good mix of resident gringos, ticos and revolving door or tourists that play in the game. They are very loose with the rules and the game is pretty slow but all in all a good time.
