Post subject:  Pensionado and Rentista residency category advantages

I have read about new laws that started in March (I think) and have read much about the requirements of each category. I have not read much about the advantages of each. Can someone please give me the advantages of each of these categories?

The only two things I have seen are - no longer the required exit every 90 days and the ability to join the medical program. I meet the monthly dollar amount of both (under the new limits) and am considering residency but can't really find too much info on why I would want say Pensionado over Rentista or vice versa.

I moved here several months ago and should have done it years ago (at least my feelings now).

Any thoughts, experience or info would be much appreciated.

Cheers -

The best place to start is to go to the Association of Residents of Costa Rica (ARCR) website.

http://www.arcr.net/

Click on the residency tab and you will find a complete explanation of the types of residency so you can decide which works best for you.

My personal opinion is that if you qualify for both pensionado and rentista you would be better served going the pensionado route. Why tie up a lot of money in the rentista program for 5 years?

ID,

Thanks - I appreciate your quick reply to this and your many informational posts on CRT!

Those were my thoughts exactly but I was not sure if there was a big advantage to "rentista".

I plan to visit the ARCR office in the coming weeks.

I did not recommend ARCR attorneys. I pointed out that their website was a place to find information on the various type of residencies and the requirements for each of them.

As always when choosing a professional be it an attorney, accountant or doctor you should seek recommendations, conduct interviews, check public records, etc. before making a decision.

you can avoid the Tico ass-gnats by standing next to someone with more money...they will go for him, not you....low rent skid marks are an excellent repellant....

that being said, it probably would be well worth your time to go to one of their seminars......the arcr seminars....

also, some have suggested living in CR as a tourist for one year (with the 90 days side trips) to see if it is even worth going thru with residency.
