I am a 27 year old from Ohio arriving on the 29th of October and am looking to rent for a month or two. Anybody have any advice or leads? I'm not trying to spend a fortune but I would also like to be comfortable and safe. I'd prefer to be close to the fun if possible. Any VALUABLE information would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone would like to meet up to show me around or grab drinks during that time I'd definitely be open to it. Go Buckeyes

My suggestion is to rent a hotel room for a few days and look around for an apartment. There are some guys who rent a hotel room for months, but I don't think I could do that. The Hotel Castillo (hotelcastillocostarica@gmail.com) should be re-opened by that time - that's a good inexpensive option to start with. You will be arriving right at Halloween time and most of the chica-friendly hotels near the action will be completely booked, so you need to book a room as soon as you can. If all the hotels you try are booked already, try the Hotel Vesuvio (info@hotelvesuvio.com). Don't book through their web site because you will pay too much. You should be able to get one of their larger rooms for $45 a night, taxes incloded.

Suggest you join CRT before you book a room with a CRT discount. Here is a posting with several hotel options:

Two apartments that a lot of guys use are Scotland and Sudamer. Both allow guests and both are reasonably close to the gulch.

for a first-timer ... the area around Sudamer is not that ... great! Honestly, I would not want to stand on the street at night to hail a cab!

The quoted hotels are an option but i would not recommend them. Sudamer is in a bad area. Dirty and overpriced.
scotland is in a good interesting area but way overpriced.
Vista linda apartments in calle blanco is a better option. Close to town. Reasonably priced. 450 to 500$. Per month. Filled with lots of gringo long term residents. Not in the best area either. Check their website.

Thanks for the helpful responses. I found an apartment to look at in Los Yoses in the $600 range. Good area?

Los Yoses is a little better but you will need a short cab ride to get to the Gulch, but the very simple bus line will help you too.

Don't get too far out of the Gulch or you might have issues getting a chica to taxi to your place in the evenings. I have not had the issue as I stay in-Gulch, but some of the older TRs reported issues getting chicas to leave the Gulch.

Most of los Yoses is only about a 10 minute -15 tops-taxi ride from the gulch. That is except between 4;30pm and about 7pm (rush hour). Most of it is a very nice neighborhood (a little older but nice). Use to be one of the more affluent areas of CR. It starts at calle 33 or c35 and goes to in front of the Mall de San Pedro and south from central for about 7-8 blocks. About the only chicas who would possibly balk at going to los Yoses would be the really hardcore REY chicas who only want to ride the elevator up and back down in 20 minutes!!!! In other words if she would not go to los Yoses YOU DO NOT WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY ON HER TO BEGIN WITH!! JMHO!!!

ChevroletShawn, I would be sure (ask specifically) about bringing chicas to your apartment! DO NOT assume that because it is an apartment that you can bring whom ever you wish in!! There are at least 2 places in Los Yoses that absolutely do not permit you to bring a chica (any chica) to your apartment!! As I said los Yoses is an area of older "money". These are the same people who do not like CR having prostitution and certainly do not like "sex tourists"!!!

I want to know how these bogus accounts are being created at will? Surely the admins have at the least a captcha in place?
